Every October, we recognize National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)—a time to celebrate the skills, talents, and contributions of people with disabilities in workplaces across the country.
The 2026 NDEAM theme, “Celebrating Value and Talent,” highlights something we see every day at L&S Consulting: people with disabilities bring valuable skills, perspectives, abilities, and experiences to the workforce.
National Disability Employment Awareness Month has a history dating back to 1945. What began as a weeklong national observance eventually expanded, and in 1988 Congress designated October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Today, NDEAM recognizes people with all types of disabilities, including individuals with mental health conditions and other nonobvious disabilities.
But creating meaningful employment opportunities shouldn’t be limited to October.
At L&S Consulting, disability employment is part of our work every day.
We work alongside individuals to identify their strengths, explore careers, prepare for employment, find opportunities, develop workplace skills, and build greater independence. We also work with employers and community partners to help create opportunities where individuals can contribute their talents and succeed.
Employment services are not about finding any job for someone. They are about discovering what a person can do, what they enjoy, what they want for their future, and where their strengths can meet the needs of an employer.
Sometimes success requires creativity.
It may mean identifying the right workplace environment. It may involve job coaching, accommodations, customized employment, additional training, or simply finding an employer willing to recognize someone’s potential.
When we focus first on a person’s strengths, interests, abilities, and goals, possibilities begin to look very different.
NDEAM is also an opportunity for employers to think about how they recruit, hire, support, and retain employees with disabilities.
The U.S. Department of Labor encourages employers to use NDEAM as an opportunity to review workplace policies, educate employees, train supervisors, examine accommodation practices, and reinforce their commitment to accessible workplaces.
Small changes can make a meaningful difference.
An inclusive workplace isn’t about lowering expectations. It’s about recognizing that talented employees may accomplish their work in different ways—and ensuring people have an opportunity to demonstrate what they can contribute.
At L&S Consulting, we are proud to support individuals as they move toward employment, independence, and their personal goals.
We are equally grateful for the employers, families, educators, Vocational Rehabilitation professionals, community partners, and others who recognize the importance of creating pathways to meaningful employment.
This October, we invite our communities and employers to join us in Celebrating Value and Talent.
Because talent exists everywhere.
Opportunity should, too.
